Teens Watching More TV Than Ever!

with one comment

The Nielson Co. released some interesting (or scary, depending on your perspective) stats at its annual “What Teens Want” conference last Thursday.

Adweek summarized it this way: ”Teens Make Time for Digital and Traditional Media. The study also refutes the notion that teenagers’ preferences differ vastly from those of adults.”

“The leading type of media use among teens is still television, with the average teenager watching 3 hours and 20 minutes per day, countering the myth of YouTube as the lead medium. Actually, Nielsen says that teens watch more TV than ever, with usage up 6 percent over the past five years in the U.S.”

How can teens find more time for TV? How can they find anything worth watching? (See my misgivings about my own TV watching through the years here.)

“The second-most popular medium among teens is the PC (including applications), with an average of 52 minutes per day. The Internet, with an average of 23 minutes per day, comes in third, according to Nielsen.”

The Adweek article pointed out that the teens’ media use mirrored that of older generations, and was less in many cases. So this blog is not to pick on teens. They are learning this from adults.

How can we deal with the onslaught of media we face every day? See “Is Your Family Manipulated by Mass Media?”

It’s so true, that is why we have a timer on the computer our son uses and we limit the television and what shows he can watch.

Hulu, YouTube, etc has almost totally supplanted television with my kids. They like not being tied to the TV channel’s schedule. Plus they can watch videos of sleeping cats falling off window sills till they come out their ears! You can never do that on TV.

I think it is the parents that spend more time with the TV. Can;t afford to do anything else. I know my grandkids are on the computer 24 seven. Not at my house though.

Thanks for the input and suggestions. I’ll copy these to the blog.
Jim, I tend to think the Nielson study will soon be out of date as online video will take off and some people may even decide to stop paying the exorbitant cable bills!
