71 Percent of Facebook Users Can’t Do Without It?

An Anderson Analytics survey of 5,000 social media users found Facebook users to be the most loyal. Thomas H.C. Anderson says in a press release “only 29% of respondents said they could ‘probably do without’ Facebook, compared to 43% for Twitter and 35% for MySpace; LinkedIn also scored 29% on this query.”

Other key stats from the study:

  • Facebook has 78 million regular users who log on at least once a month.
  • MySpace, 67 million.
  • Twitter, 17 million.
  • LinkedIn, 11 million.
  • MySpace has the youngest user group, with an average age of 29.
  • Twitter, 33.
  • Facebook, 34.
  • LinkedIn, 36.

The report found an estimated 110 million people in the United States, or 36 percent of the total, are regular users of social networking sites, with 61 percent of those under age 35.

  • Men have an average of 140 friends on Facebook, 53 Twitter followers and 71 LinkedIn connections
  • Women have an average of 110 friends, 18 followers and 36 connections.

“The report found that this is because males are less likely to be concerned about connecting to strangers online.”

AdAge reported some additional facts it gleaned from the study:

“Users tend to spend a lot of time on social networks. The average social networker goes to social sites five days a week and checks in about four times a day for a total of an hour each day. A super-connected 9% stay logged in all day and are ‘constantly checking out what’s new.’”

Only 15 percent said they go on social networks at work.

Users of social media sites are “four times more vocal than non-users when it comes to commenting on discussion boards, posting blog entries and uploading videos.”

What about those who do not use social media?

“Contrary to what some might think, people who spurn social media aren’t tech haters. In fact, they spend as much time as social-media fans surfing the web. But they say they don’t use social media for three basic reasons: They don’t have the time, they don’t think it’s secure or they think it’s stupid.”

The adoption of social networking is reaching its peak in the United States. When nonusers are asked when they might be trying social networking sites, 73 percent say “probably not in my lifetime.”

What about you? Can you do without social networking? How has social networking affected your life—for better or worse?

  1. This is not surprising! I find Facebook to be pretty addictive. I have to set limits on myself as to how much I can go on it. For a SAHM who is pretty isolated from other people I would have to say that while I could definitely live without Facebook I would really miss it!

  2. I’ve done without practically all of it. But Twitter is valuable for promoting your ventures; that’s the only reason I might use it.

I’ve found it to be a wonderful way to keep in touch with people – meet new people – find old friends – cheaper and more versitile than the phone. “Encourage each other daily!” – now we can do it almost from wherever we are.

I like it because we can stay in touch with our family and friends and church family.
