  1. There are really two sorts of ways to talk about the Bible–either about themes, where one takes a subject and finds verses in the Bible that relate to it, or analyzes passages, starting from a given set of verses and examining its context and point about a variety of themes. Both can work. For example, if the entire family is reading the same parts of the Bible, or if there is a particular situation that the family is dealing with, these provide openings for the Bible study to reach the concerns of the whole family. To that end, just about anything can serve as an example or counterpoint to biblical instruction, be it personal experiences, books, music, and movies, or whatever else strikes the interest of family members. The key is to be in tune with what is going on in the lives of our families, and being sensitive to the needs, wants, fears, and hopes of each other.

Mike Bennett So you are saying, when you walk by the way, when you lie down and when you rise up (Deuteronomy 6:7)? Or are you suggesting regular but short sit down sessions? Or both?

  3. Found a great article by Don Hooser “Teach Your Children With Family Bible Study” at http://www.gnmagazine.org/issues/gn63/biblestudy.htm
    Anybody find other good resources?

  4. Well, my family and I on the Sabbath have a Bible study usually using the Bible on DVD on the downstairs TV. We sometimes just sit down and go through parts of the Bible each Sabbath, and when questions come up we pause it and discuss. I sometimes pull up specific scriptures on the screen that I would like to discuss, and we discuss them. And occasionally my dad gets a subject that he wants to study in particular, and leads the discussion. It’s nice sitting down as a family, and using the Bible on DVD because it reads it to you and you can see it. Plus, it’s usually a situation where we don’t run out of topics because by listening to the Bible we always find something new to discuss.

    • Thanks, Sarah! That sounds cool. My dad now has the Bible on DVD and he uses it every day. It’s harder for him to read these days, so the fact it reads it out loud is a plus for him. When I was visiting him, we watched and listened to it together, so I guess that’s still a family Bible study even though I’m an adult now! But it seems like he had it on fast speed–we got through the entire book of Acts in no time, it seems!

      • No problem; I’m glad to post. :)
Yes it’s very nice, especially for elders.
Depending on who the DVD is from the speed can vary very much, I’ve noticed that too.
